Why I Love Shooting Weddings at The Alnwick Garden
There are some venues that simply feel like home, and for me, The Alnwick Garden is one of them.
Long before I ever photographed a wedding there, I spent seven years working at The Alnwick Garden while I was a student. It was a huge part of my life during that time. I got to know the rhythms of the garden, the way the light moves across the spaces throughout the day, and how each area changes with the seasons. Eventually I left to pursue my PhD in Molecular Genetics, but my connection with the garden never really went away. Now, returning there as a wedding photographer feels incredibly special — like coming back to somewhere that shaped a part of my life.
Because of that history, I genuinely feel that no photographer knows The Alnwick Garden quite like I do.
The Pavilion: Beautiful Light for Your Ceremony and Reception
One of the things I love most about weddings at The Alnwick Garden is The Pavilion. It’s an incredible space for both ceremonies and receptions. The design allows the room to be flooded with natural daylight, which is a dream for photography. Soft, even light fills the space, creating a bright and airy atmosphere that looks beautiful in photographs.
At the same time, you’re still completely under cover, which means couples get the best of both worlds — gorgeous natural light without having to worry about the unpredictability of the Northumberland weather.
From a photographer’s perspective, it’s one of those rare venues where the lighting works beautifully throughout the day, whether it’s the ceremony, speeches, or evening celebrations.
Endless Photo Opportunities Around the Garden
Another reason I love shooting weddings here is the incredible variety of backdrops within just a short walk.
The Labyrinth is always a fun place to take couples for portraits. It creates wonderful pockets of light.
The Rose Garden offers something completely different — elegant, colourful, and timeless. When the roses are in bloom, it’s one of the most romantic locations you could imagine.
The Ornamental Garden provides beautiful symmetry, texture, and structure, perfect for classic wedding portraits.
And of course there’s the Grand Cascade, which is one of the most iconic features of The Alnwick Garden. The scale of it creates an incredible sense of drama and grandeur in photos.
Having worked in the garden for so many years, I know exactly where the best light falls, where the quiet corners are, and how to make the most of each area depending on the time of day.
The Garden Becomes Your Own Private Space
One of the most magical parts of a wedding at The Alnwick Garden happens after your meal, when the garden closes to the public.
Suddenly this incredible space becomes completely private, just for you and your guests. It transforms the atmosphere of the evening and creates a feeling that you have the whole garden to yourselves.
From a photography perspective, this is when we can often take some of the most relaxed and beautiful couple portraits, without crowds and with the soft evening light.
A Venue That Keeps Everyone Together
The Pavilion is also fantastic as a party venue. One thing I particularly love is that guests aren’t split across multiple rooms. Everyone is together in the same space, which creates a much better atmosphere on the dancefloor and throughout the evening.
It keeps the energy high and means the celebration feels shared by everyone.
Perfect for Night Photography
The structure of The Pavilion and the surrounding garden also makes it a brilliant place for night-time photography. Once the sun has gone down, we can step outside for dramatic evening portraits using the architecture, pathways, and lighting around the garden.
These night shots often end up being some of my favourite images from the day.
A Place That Means a Lot to Me
Photographing weddings at The Alnwick Garden isn’t just about working at a beautiful venue — it’s about returning to somewhere that was such an important part of my life.
Having spent seven years working there, I know the garden inside out. I know how to make the most of the space, how to work with the light, and how to guide couples to the very best locations for their photographs.
It’s a place that still feels special every time I walk through the gates, and it’s always a huge privilege to document such an important day there.
Quite simply, I love shooting weddings at The Alnwick Garden — and I honestly don’t think there’s a photographer who knows it better.
